DirecTV and Tribune Broadcasting Reach A Deal

today-in-america-tv

It never seems to end with contract impasses and DirecTV. Tribune Broadcasting and the cable satellite giant just signed a new five year deal. Failure to do so would have left fans of American Idol to Major League Baseball games without their favorites. Areas affected by the recent blackout where in large media markets such as New York, Los Angeles and Florida. All in all, about 5 million homes were affected by the blackout when both media monsters could not come to terms.

We can hear the collective sigh of relief from the 5 million homes across the country.

There is nothing as frustrating as turning on your favorite channel only to see it blacked out by two conglomerates beating each other up over fees.

Steeler Addicts and Bull Dog Fans – One and the Same

The World's Most Famous Bulldog

Today in America TV is excited to connect with one of the most popular Pittsburgh Steeler fan sites in the nation-Steeler Addicts. Their self professed mission statement is:

It’s More Than A Fever, It’s An Addiction! The very active site for all things Black ‘N Gold even offers an extensive list of bars and restaurants in the U.S. for the traveling or transplanted loyalist.

Speaking of Steeler related: the recently retired Hines Ward (86) has been spending time with his alma mater, The University of Georgia Bulldogs.  Sports news sites report that he may be thinking about coaching there. All we can say is there is no place like home. If it feels right, just do it. The Bulldog fans are just as crazy loyal about their team as the Steeler fans. This would be a great fit for the man who took retiring from Pittsburgh so emotionally. The school has a good rep for embracing alumni. Go home and get some sugar, Hines!

Have Some Cheese with that Wine

Cheese is another.

Nuts. One of the fat releasing foods.

And chocolate and nuts! These five foods normally banned from any diet conscious person’s menu can now be enjoyed. They contain valuable fat releasing properties that are actually good for you.

  • Red Wine- has resveratrol, a potent anti-aging chemical that is a fat releaser too.
  • Cheese- a good source of calcium and another fat releaser.
  • Nuts – have PUFAs—polyunsaturated fatty acids, found in fish as well as in many nuts and seeds boost metabolism and calorie burn.
  • Chocolate- contains epicatechins, the antioxidants found in cocoa. Cocoa reduces degeneration of the arteries in the heart and it blunts fat deposition.

What can we say? Life is good when you can drink wine, have some pizza, a side dish of nuts and chocolate for dessert and lose weight. Just in time for March madness.

No Small Act of Kindness for LeBron James

Smilin' LeBron James

Troop Supporter and Miami Heat player LeBron James

A news story about the goodness of LeBron James is in the press again. This time the act of kindness took place at an Oklahoma airport where the Miami Heat flight was refueling before heading to Portland, Oregon. The team was waiting inside the airport when LeBron saw some military personnel. He urged the Heat players to take pictures and sign autographs with the troops before the flight departed again.

It’s hard to say who was more grateful: the Miami Heat players for the troops sacrifice or the troops for this one tall act of kindness to them.

It Is Ducky to Follow Your Heart’s Desire

Today-in-america-tv-it-is-ducky-to-follow-your-hearts-desire

Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson

Terry Bradshaw, who after college, went on to get the top pick in the 1970 NFL Draft, had a lengthy and much respected career with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He guided them to four Super Bowl victories, earned a spot in the Hall of Fame, and is the host of Today in America with Terry Bradshaw. Now he’s a sports celebrity publicizing Nutrisystem and an analyst on Fox NFL Sunday. But did you know that a former teammate from Louisiana Tech left football before he graduated and became famous for his duck calling business?

You could say that Phil Robertson go his “calling” back in the old football days. He left the game to pursue his heart’s desire of duck hunting. That desire for duck hunting turned into making his own duck call which turned into a home based business called the Duck Commander, which then turned into an A&E TV show called Duck Dynasty. Now Robertson is more of a TV celebrity than Bradshaw.

Two men were on the same path that went different ways and both followed their heart’s desire and became famous. Now that’s ducky!

Black and Gold Forever

Black and Gold Flying

Long fly the Black and Gold Flag

Ever wonder why all of the City of Pittsburgh professional sports teams wear black and gold?

City founder William Pitt  had a coat of arms that was black and gold.

The City of Pittsburgh’s flag is colored black and gold, based on the color of Pitt’s coat of arms.

City sports teams adopted the colors.

Pittsburgh is the only city in the United States in which all sporting teams wear the same colors.

Pittsburghers are so loyal that even the Pittsburgh Brewing Company’s label is black and gold.

(The same loyalty applies to those who were born and raised outside the city limits.)

Save a Head – Stop The Bounty Hunting

Land of Bounty Hunting Now Nil

New Orleans Saints Logo

The New Orleans Saints head coach, GM and defensive coordinator received suspensions from the game for a “bounty” put on the other team’s players.

Head coach Sean Payton received a one year suspension for allegedly trying to cover up the cash payouts on the bounties.

GM Mickey Loomis received an 8 game suspension and former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams was suspended indefinitely.

The team was fined $500,000 and has to give up their second-round picks in the 2012 and 2013 NFL Drafts.

If you don’t know, a bounty is when players use their own money to reward those who cause injury to the opposing side’s players.

These punishments should give fans and other teams hope that the NFL leadership is serious about reducing the brutality of the game. That should be good news for players who are prone to practice and game received concussions. While we understand that football is a tough sport, no one should get away with the viciousness that a bounty paid would provide. Kudos to the NFL for the crackdown.
